We stand under an old arch in St. Petersburg, gazing at the city on a rainy day. In the distance, the iconic green dome of Kazan Cathedral rises, surrounded by historic red-brick buildings, the yellow lights reflected on the wet pavement, and people going about their lives under the rain… In this lesson, using the layered and textured nature of oil pastels, we brought the spirit of one of the world's most romantic cities to life on paper. The most special aspect of this work is the framing technique created with the arch structure. This composition, which directs the viewer's eye from the darkness of the arch to the city light, and then to the magnificence of Kazan Cathedral, is a powerful narrative method frequently used in art. In this master-level oil pastel lesson, we have the opportunity to deepen our understanding of both technique and composition. Topics covered in this lesson: **Architectural Framing** I showed you step-by-step how to make the arch structure the main element of the composition, and how to create contrast between the darkness in the foreground and the light in the background. **Warm-Cold Contrast** We demonstrated how yellow-orange building lights and a gray-blue sky complement each other, creating atmospheric depth using the layering properties of oil pastels. **Wet Pavement Reflections** I showed how to capture the yellow light of rain reflecting off the pavement, the vertically extending reflections, and the character of the wet surface with the creamy texture of oil pastels. **Kazan Cathedral and Architectural Details** We convincingly rendered architectural elements in oil pastels, including the green dome of St. Petersburg's iconic Kazan Cathedral, the red-brick historical buildings, and the stone textures in the arches. **Figures and City Life** We added silhouettes of people walking in the rain, reflections of parked cars, and details of St. Petersburg's street life to the composition. **Layering and Texture** Using the layering technique, the strongest aspect of oil pastels, we created rich texture, atmospheric depth, and richness of color. The materials I used in this study are: Mont Marte Extra Soft oil pastels, Pentel Oil Pastels, and Sennelier oil pastels. This lesson is a special experience for artists interested in atmospheric oil pastel work and wanting to delve deeper into architecture and cityscapes. It was a delightful journey where we brought the spirit of St. Petersburg, the splendor of Kazan Cathedral, and the magic of rain to life on paper with oil pastels.
