You've started with gouache, learned the basic techniques, and created your first works. Now it's time to take another step into the magical world of gouache. In this 6-week Level 2 live course, we will deepen your gouache skills with landscape, still life, and composition studies. We will use Himi gouache paints in the course — 24 colors or 56/112 color sets. Himi's characteristic creamy jelly consistency, vibrant color range, and easy blending properties are ideal for producing sophisticated works in Level 2 subjects. It is designed for students who have previously been introduced to gouache and are familiar with basic layering and color mixing. You will develop your skills with nature landscapes, floral still life compositions, architectural details, and organic textures. We will create rich and atmospheric works by taking maximum advantage of gouache's opaque layering properties. Topics we will work on in this course: Composition and framing — you will learn how to set up a scene, the balance between foreground and background, and how to create a focal point. Advanced color mixing and tonal range — sophisticated color transitions, warm-cold balance, and atmospheric tones with gouache's opaque nature. Layering and dark-to-light techniques — creating light effects, highlight, and dimension with opaque layering, gouache's strongest asset. Texture studies — how to express the texture of natural surfaces, fabrics, stones, plants, and organic forms with gouache. Landscape and atmosphere — sky transitions, sense of distance, seasonal atmosphere, and light-shadow play. Still life compositions — sophisticated still life studies with flowers, fruits, vases, and objects. You can easily participate with your existing Himi gouache set (24, 56, or 112 colors). High-quality gouache paper or a mixed media notebook will suffice. This course is designed for students who have completed beginner-level gouache training or are proficient in basic gouache techniques. Those who complete this course will be able to participate in our advanced gouache workshops. We start in November 2026. Let's delve one step deeper into the layered and colorful world of gouache.
