Reaper

Reaper
Van Gogh painted this walled field from the barred window of his hospital room; he was not allowed to leave the garden during the first few months. The wheat is plowed with thick yellow paste, and the reaper is indicated by a few blue brushstrokes. In a letter to Theo, he considers the wheat a symbol of nature's cycle and says that the harvest in the painting is not sad but almost smiling.
